The rivalry returns.
Coppin State added a transfer named Sam Sessoms I've highlighted already from Penn State this offseason. He averaged 12ppg there on a 17 PER in the Big Ten for a solid team. He also averaged about 20ppg, 5rpg 5apg at Binghampton before that. Before anyone thinks it was grades or any of the nonsense excuses we often have to hear as to how schools like that get these level of players, he graduated from Penn State.
So far on the season, he is averaging 23.9ppg, 4.2rpg, 6.0apg, 1.6spg with a 25.1 PER with a .629 true shooting. He's shooting over 40% from three on high volume and 80% from the line.Sessoms just had 24 points and 9 assists on NC State last game. He dropped 28, 6 and 6 on a ranked Maryland team 2 games before that. I can't understate how good he's been.
Coppin State also landed a 6-8 225 guy that averaged 9ppg, and 4rpg, when he was at a good A10 St. Bonnaventure team and returned their best player that averaged 14ppg and 7rpg off of last year's team that nearly beat ECU at home.
This team hasn't been great this season at 4-7 #219 NET, but they have the best player on the court and that should be a concern even at home. Sessoms is a great college player who could certainly carry them to victory. ECU should win and is expected to be about a 7-point favorite at home.
There just isn't much else around him outside the 2 other players I mentioned. Coppin State is a team that isn't efficient (250th ORtg) and has terrible defense (359th), but they do shoot a lot of 3's and FTs ranking top 90 in volume in both. If those shots drop or if Sessoms is going nuts they have enough to win. Having a player like that always gives you a chance and their style allows for high-upside nights.
